Wedding Reception Linens………how fancy is too fancy?

This blog is inspired by my meeting with a linen representative in my area yesterday.  We chatted over ice tea and looked at her very impressive selection of fine linens, chair covers, runners and sashes.  I must say, I have never seen such a wide variety of colors, textures, patterns, and styles!!  So with so much to choose from………..how do you know where to begin?

Obviously like anything else when it comes to planning your wedding…………budget becomes a factor.  But what if you have your heart set on that incredible print that is sure to take drab to drop dead gorgeous, but your head is telling you that you just cannot afford such extravagance????  Have no fear………..it’s all in the “little” details!

So take for example you have decided that a  certain print/texture/color is absolutely right to dress your tables.  You find that you are going to need to dress 20 tables, but each table-cloth is going to cost you somewhere between $35.00-$40.00 to rent………………for ONE day!  Ok…not hard to figure out here….just your table cloths alone might run you as much as $800.00………..and we haven’t even talked about the napkins, chair covers, runners….so in reality each table may end up costing you over $1,000!!  And that’s just to dress them up!!!  YIKES…………………..ok here comes the solution……………

While it is so easy to get caught up in the dizzying array of incredible fabrics…..and of course now your brain is confused, overwhelmed, and just plain exhausted….that you blindly point to something that your now feel you must “settle” on because you cannot possibly afford a $1,000 a table just so people can wipe their faces and spill wine all over them………………………..whew…………..breath…………………….STOP!!!!!  Save yourself from all of this unwanted and unneeded grief.  START with the LEAST expensive options which will run you approx $13.00 per cloth and relax.  I will tell you that by choosing the right linen company, you will discover that they will have an enormous selection of beautiful linens under $20.00/table…(cloth only).

When you meet with either your wedding planner or linen company, ask to see the least expensive table cloths selections first.  If you or your planner is working with a good and reputable company, those basic selections will be beautiful and you will no doubt have a lot to choose from.  Now mind you most of the lesser expensive options are going to be solid in color, but for most venues….that’s just fine.  Ok…but where can you add that incredible print you can’t get out of your mind???????????  Here’s where that “pop” of extravagance comes in.  You might want to pick that wonderful pattern to use for your runners.  Unless you have a centerpiece design that is covering most of the table……here’s your opportunity to show a little…………..whooo hooooo!!  Or you might consider adding a more dramatic napkin to each place setting for a little wow factor.  Also there is absolutely nothing wrong with dressing up your cake table, gift table, or head table with a more elaborate print….as long as it fits the overall tone, color, and theme of the wedding.  You don’t want to mix some ultra modern print when everything else looks like a country garden!!!  Don’t believe people make that mistake?  Oh……….trust me……it happens!

So again, before you get shown the most expensive and elaborate material, save yourself some heartache, and ask to see the basic selections FIRST.  If the sky’s the limit on your budget…then by all means……..start at the top!  But in 2012, most brides are going to be working with a tighter budget, so be realistic and creative here.  Do not spend unnecessary money on dressing your tables.  There are so many other important things you’ll want to save that for!  But if you are armed with good information when you sit down to make your selections, you will come out feeling great and have money left over for the honeymoon!!!  Happy shopping!
